BRC Hardware
Burningman 2008

"It's all about the gear."

tools rules

The Black Rock City Hardware Shoppe will be onsite with a variety of tools and supplies to help fix or build things that are broke or need to be built on the playa. We'll have hand tools, power tools, bike parts, fasteners, duck tape,
etc. Open every day from the time we get up till sundown.

We're a hardware shop. We bring tools and supplies so that all those people who come out of the playa for a week and a half have a place to go if they break or need something. We have hand tools, power tools, nails, nuts, bolts, tape, string, wire, paint, bike tools, automotive tools, glue, rivets, and whatever else we can mange to bring. We enjoy helping people work on their own art projects or helping camps who have suffered structural difficulties but we have also helped with minor automotive problems, generator issues, and fixed lots of bikes. Whatever people bring us, we'll try and fix if we can. We also cut and bend lots of rebar to make stakes for people. We do not have lots of raw building materials such as 2x4s, PVP pipes, or plywood but do have a need/want board for people who have excess or are looking for such to communicate their needs.

Camp Plans

In front, we have our sign that also acts as a bike rack. Usually set back about 5' from the road so the guy wires and bikes don't get in the way. The main part of the camp is a large tent about 40' wide and 80' long including guide wires and all. One end is open and that acts as the shop. The inside of the tent is split into three sections. The front is the shop and separated by cloth walls from the rest of the tent. in the shop is where the tools are used and there are also work tables with equipment and work space. behind the cloth wall in the middle of the tent is the camp kitchen and living space followed by all personal tents. Usually, one side to the tent is along the road, again set back to guide lines don't go into the road as is the back of the tent. The other side which is usually interior to neighboring camps has the camp shower, evaporation tray, and vehicles.

We'd really like to be in the inner camp again. Mainly because we need to be on the grid in order to use the power tools that we bring along. Also this will help us with being there for people when they need us, since that's what our camp is about, helping people in need. We'd prefer to be between two other camps. We also like Lanceland. they're cool guys and we'd like to be near them if possible.

Clean Up

We all follow standard "Leave no trace procedure." Everything we pack in, we pack out. Stuff is gone over before we pack for Burningman and unnecessary packaging is gotten rid of. Our gray water is caught in a plastic drum and will be evaporated in an evaporation pit we are building so that no gray water is spilled don the playa. Our main camp is going to be covered in a drop cloth in order to reduce the amount of wear and tear caused by our being there. All trash is separated into different plastic bags for proper disposal. What burnable trash we have will be collected in paper bags and burned in the communal fires on Sun if they are again available. No part of our camp is meant to be burned afterwards although we do have some wooden materials we have collected while at BM that may need to be burned in the communal fire pits on Sun also. We have a magnetic broom in order to pick up any metal bits or shavings that may have fallen to the playa floor during our work.

Without Tools, we'd still be up in the trees flinging crap at one another. Without Duct tape, the Universe itself would start to leak. I don't know if either option would upset me too much.
